Windan Bridge Loop
Located on the banks of the beautiful Swan River in the centre of Perth, the capital of Western Australia, this trail takes you past Herrison Island, manicured parklands and East Perth with its galleries, public art and cafés. If you have more energy add on the city loop to the Narrows Bridge or go upstream to Garrett Road Bridge.
Featuring diverse wildlife from birds and fish to river dolphins and even the odd bull shark, the river is an integral part of Perth’s identity. Ranging from the wide estuary in and around the city, to the narrower bush lined river upstream, it is possible to cycle from the river mouth in Fremantle to the upper reaches in the Swan Valley.
On this route, stop off on Herisson Island under the Causeway. It is home to a colony of Western Grey kangaroos which can be found in the southern enclosure of the island and are best sighted in the early morning or evening.
The Windan Bridge loop is a section of just one of 12 riding routes from the Department of Transport's 'Ride around the Rivers' guide. Visit the Department's website for other guides to cycling around Perth and regional areas including Margaret River, Albany, Kalbarri and Rottnest Island.
